Asin was born on October 26, 1985. Her father’s name is Joseph Thotumkal and mother Dr. Seline. She has completed her B.A. English Literature at St. Teresa’s College, Kochi. Before entering into films, she was a part-time model and businesswoman. She started modeling at the age of 14 and is trained in Bharatanatyam and folk dance. She began her career acting in minor roles as a supporting artist in the Malayalam cinema industry. Her debut Film is ‘Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka’ in Malayalam. While also attending an acting studio, to follow her dream to act. After her debut in the Malayalam film industry, she acted in Telugu language.
She did a number of movies in Telugu including ‘Amma Nana O Tamila Ammai’ (2003) for which she received the Filmfare Best Actress award, ‘Sivamani 98480 22338′ (2003), ‘Lakshmi Narasimha’ (2004), ‘Gharshana’ (2004), ‘Chakram’ (2005) etc.
Asin won the hearts of the Tamil audience with her captivating performance in the super hit movie ‘Ghajini’ (2005). After seeing her superb performance in Ghajini, Aamir Khan, super star in Bollywood, has invited her to act the female lead in its Hindi version.
